The 47th National Honor Society Ceremony of the James E. Kearney Chapter took place on Tuesday November 27th, 2012. The hard working and dedicated juniors and seniors were honored Tuesday in the Bishop Kearney Auditorium. Every teacher and member of administration came out for this special occasion, as well as the newly inducted members’ families were in attendance.  The place was full of smiles and admiration for these students. National Honor Society students are children who have outstanding academic achievement, as well as high leadership and involvement in their community. They were hand chosen by the selection committee made up of Kearney teachers and administration. The officers as well put on a memorable ceremony and made us other NHS members proud.
As being a member of NHS I can say firsthand how much of an honor it is for these students. They will hold this honor proud and mean every word in the NHS pledge, and signify the characteristics of NHS members, leadership, scholarship, service, and character. 50th Anniversary Gala

Because I worked on the commemorative yearbook, I was invited to the Gala Celebration!  We had a blast. I'm the one in the middle of the first row.

The way that Bishop Kearney alumni speak to each other, you might think they were still attending Bishop Kearney. Everyone’s inner student comes out when they see the people with whom they graduated high school. This bond is shared between students worldwide. It’s in that instant that you’re transported to high school again: chatting outside waiting for the bus to arrive, eating lunch in the school cafeteria, cracking jokes with your friends in the hall.
Bishop Kearney alumni recently had the chance to share the stories and laughs once again at the schools 50^th Anniversary Gala, which took place at Locust Hill Country Club. As people of the Bishop Kearney family walked in the doors at Locust Hill Country Club they reconnected with the people they knew way back when, and were greeted with a great “it’s good to see you again” hug.
This Gala was not only about the reunions. This Gala was to celebrate the 50 years of amazing success that Bishop Kearney High School has achieved. Through the years, Bishop Kearney High School has been a strong Catholic educating partner in the Rochester area and continues to be. Guests of the Bishop Kearney 50^th Anniversary Gala were given a copy of the Bishop Kearney Commemorative Yearbook summarizing 50 years of all things BK. The gala was a truly wonderful celebration that will be etched in our memories for the next 50 years.

This year is Bishop Kearney's 50th Anniversary. The school decided to create a commemorative yearbook to document and honor the decades of Kearney excellence. I worked on the project which lasted into the summer and included an interview by the Catholic Post.

Bishop Kearney held their first TWLOHA (To Write Love on Her Arms) fundraising walkathon.  We had a great time creating tee-shirts, signing sponsors, and walking to raise money.

Greece Trip 2012

Every year an international trip is offered to the Bishop Kearney student body. This year, 21 students were lucky enough to travel to the beautiful country of Greece. This ten day trip began on April 5^th and lasted until the 14^th.

After an hour flight out of Rochester and a nine and a half hour flight out of JFK Airport, the students and chaperones finally landed in Athens Greece. Though a little tired from the long flight, everyone was ready to get started with the tour.  The first four days of the tour featured the many sights that Athens, Greece has to offer. The Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena, the museum, and the Parliament are just a few of the sights that were highlighted in the tour. A guided sightseeing tour to Delphi was one of the highlights of the trip which took place on one of the four days in Athens. This tour was three hours from Athens, and completely worth the long ride. The ride there was filled with winding roads and narrow streets through mountains and small towns. Delphi is one of the most prominent archeological sites in Greece which dates back to the 4^th century B.C.

This once in a lifetime trip also featured six of Greece’s most beautiful islands on a four day Aegean Cruise. First, the ship cruised to Mykonos where the travelers enjoyed the shopping and sights that the island had to offer. The white was buildings with blue trim left the travelers with no doubt that Mykonos Island was one of Greece’s most picturesque islands. Next, the ship docked at Kusadasi, Turkey where some of the students took part in an excursion to Ancient Ephesus while the others enjoyed the many shops.  Those who went to Ancient Ephesus were in for quite a treat. The ancient ruins were quite a sight and everyone was able to walk through the ruins, take pictures, and take in the beautiful scenery. After Kusadasi, the next island was the very small island of Patmos. This was a short yet satisfying visit for the students who returned back to the ship because of the cold and rainy weather. Next, the ship docked at the island of Rhodes. Here, the students and chaperones were able to do a great deal of shopping as well as eat at little restaurants and cafes. The next island that the cruise featured was the largest of the Grecian islands named Crete. The travelers shopped for a few hours and then returned to the ship ready for the most anticipated destination on the cruise, Santorini. Everyone has seen the pictures of the white wash buildings with the blue domes. This is what everyone expected and that’s exactly what they got. Though some students stayed on the island and ventured through the towns and shops themselves, others went on an excursion to the volcano and hot water springs. This excursion was filled with the beautiful sights of the island and the surrounding water by foot and also by sailboat. For most, this was not only the most anticipated, but also the favorite island.

After the cruise ended, the travelers spent the last day of the tour in Athens. A sightseeing tour and some last minute shopping wrapped up the trip. This experience is surely something that no one will ever forget.

Key Club Traditon: Supply and Book Drive

Every year the BK Key Club sponsors a school wide book drive to benefit public schools in Rochester that are underfunded. This year the BK Book Drive Committee decided that P.S. #33 would receive all the collected books. School #33 is the largest public elementary school in Rochester with over 1200 students throughout the fifty nine classes.

On Tuesday April 16, nineteen Kearney students along with Mrs. Rachel Shipp, travelled down the street to School #33 to drop off all the collected books and school supplies. Once students arrived, they unloaded the boxes of books and supplies and carried them through the school into the main offices for the Pre-K and Kindergarten. Splitting off into four groups, the students were given to opportunity to read to some of the kindergarten classes.

It was a heartwarming experience to be able to let the kids pick out a book of their own and read it with them. Some of the visiting BK students even needed to be pulled away from the smiling kids! Everyone was having such a great time. Mrs. Rose Urezetta, principal of Pre-K and Kindergarten, said “I’ll send an email out to the teachers to choose their books, and they will be gone by the end of the day!”

It was rewarding seeing the kindergarten classes with their books as they showed off the stories to their friends and the BK students. Let’s hope the Key Club can gather even more books next year for this awesome school!

On November 21, 2011, the Bishop Kearney Key Club had their annual “Pink Passion” dress down.  Students were allowed to dress in pink for $3.00 and in normal dress down for $5.00, with all of the money benefiting the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester.  There was an outstanding amount of students who participated, and it was very sobering to see how many people care about finding a cure.

Not only did the Key Club raise money from the dress down, but they also did so through a bake sale.  Students could buy cupcakes and cookies for a dollar, and each dollar was eventually added to the final calculation of what had been raised.  With a grand total of $1,107.02 raised, the Bishop Kearney Key Club has much to be proud of.  And as a school, pride should also come from the fact that students donated over ten per cent more than they had in the previous year. The money will be presented in the form of a check to a representative from the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester during a December 8^th mass in the Bishop Kearney auditorium.

The Breast Cancer Committee of Key Club really pulled through and made a wonderful event to support an important cause. Special thanks goes to the Kearney family for dressing in pink in a defiant stand to end breast cancer!

Key Club Officers

I've been elected as Key Club President for the 2012-2013 school year!

At Bishop Kearney, Key Club is a rapidly growing club and very active in the community. The officers contribute a lot to Key Club, and this past year, they have been putting together the TWLOHA walk for depressed teens. Zach Kirisits is the 2011-2012 Key Club President, and he has done a fantastic job of getting all members involved in the community.

This past month, new officers were selected for the 2012-2013 school year. These students will have the honor of continuing the legacy of the Bishop Kearney Key Club. Sophomore Giuliana Pietrantoni was selected to be the President. She ran Pink Passion this past school year and demonstrated great leadership skills, which proves that she has the characteristics of a president. Gabe Battaglia was selected as Vice President, and her classmate Christy Reiss was selected to be Editor. The two juniors chosen were Ethan Whiting (as Treasurer) and Ryan Miller (as Secretary). Next year there will be two senior officers, but three junior ones. Therefore, younger officers have a chance to learn and grow in their positions.

The new Key Club officers are now learning from the current officers, so they will be ready to jump right in when September comes around. Everyone has a lot of faith in these five individuals to continue the great works that Key Club performs in every school year. Each one is committed to their specific duty, which will allow the club to be very organized. Every returning Key Club member should be excited and eager for the next school year, considering Key Club will be left in great hands. Text from The Coronet - A New Year of Key Club
